The biggest hurdle we have to overcome as surface designers is not learning Illustrator, getting more followers on Instagram, or, in fact, how to create a lead magnet for your email list. It’s the buzzy thoughts in our heads that we should be careful with.
I’m a big believer in affirmations and mindset. I’m still a work-in-progress and that’s okay. I acknowledge there will always be moments where I lapse and have negative thoughts. The key is to catch it early on, and then replace it with more positive words.
How we think can really affect us. It can encourage us to take action and try something new, or it could freeze us in our tracks. Often it is overwhelm and fear that keeps us from moving forward. Our thoughts are what decides if we’ll make it or break it as a surface designer.

When you hear that inner mean girl whispering in your head, pause, take a deep breath and say, “It’s okay, thanks for caring. I’ve got this.” Our inner mean girl, she’s that little girl in us that’s been hurt one too many times. So be gentle with her, and she’ll be kind to you. Gradually, the voice in your head will be your biggest cheerleader.
